Back in 1954 H.C. Tjon Kie Fat already noted in his thesis there was a lack of information in the Netherlands Antilles regarding basic data on birth, mortality and age distribution. His recommendations were probably responsible for the fact that since 1960 a census has been hel very decade on every island of the Netherlands Antilles. /since 1954, apart from a published nutrition survey carried out by r. Luyken e.a., no published medial scientific research has been carried out on the Winward Islands of the Netherlands Antilles.
After his arrival on Saba in June 1983, it soon became clear to R. Mol that considering his work (as a Doctor), there would be enough time left over to set up and carry out a scientific study in order to put his contract period to the best possible use.
